"Compact" Live at the Rover

Title: "Compact" Live at the Rover
Category: Performance
Year: 2010

Synopsis: This performance with Julie Fotheringham was loosely inspired by a brief period of inexplicable heart trouble that Julie experienced recently. The 'fluttering' effect of the images and music was meant to convey the peculiar and unsettling feeling of the heart beating irregularly.

Production Notes: The projected images are grabbed live from a video camera. When a note is played on the MIDI guitar, the computer captures a live frame from the camera and adds it to a repeating cycle of the 5 most recently captured frames. Futhermore, the velocity of the guitar notes controls the mix between the looping frames and a still frame (the most recently captured frame). As for the music, when the MIDI guitar is played two different sounds are heard: firstly, the guitar (but pitch-shifted one octave lower) and various sounds on a synthesizer.
